By default, during a load test, each load generator (including the controller and load agents) operates in a single-process mode. However, operating system limitations may restrict test throughput.

Starting with StresStimulus v6.1, load generators can run in a multi-process environment to enhance test throughput.

Note:

Multi-process load generators replaced Local load agents from the previous version of StresStimulus.

The number of processes each load generator uses can be configured in two ways:

  • Manually – The user specifies the number of processes.
  • Automatically – StresStimulus determines the number of processes based on the number of virtual users (VUs).

In multi-process mode, the main StresStimulus process distributes the virtual user (VU) load across multiple load-generating processes (StresStimulus.Local.Host.exe). The main process evenly distributes VUs across load-generating processes.

Number of load-generating processes

The number of load-generating processes used by each load generator is displayed in the text of the Load Agent tree node. If the number of processes is 1, the load generator will execute in a single-process mode.

Automatic process configuration

  1. Set the "Multi-Process mode" property to Automatic.
  2. Set the "Maximum VUs per process" property to the maximum number of VUs a single load-generating process will run.

Manual process configuration

  1. Set the "Multi-Process mode" property to Manual.
  2. Set the "Number of Processes" property to the maximum number of load-generating processes it can use.

Note:

The "Number of Processes" property defines the maximum allowed processes, while the actual number of processes is determined by the main StresStimulus process and depends on the load pattern setting.
