StresStimulus stores test results in a database. The following storage options are supported:

  • Embedded SQLite (Default) – A lightweight, embedded database that creates a separate file for each test run. It has no size limitations and has replaced SQL Server CE.
  • SQL Server – Allows storing test results in an external SQL Server instance, enabling virtually unlimited test log storage.
  • Embedded SQL Server CE (Deprecated) – A compact database that generates a separate file for each test run, with a maximum size of 4 GB.

Embedded SQL Databases

SQLite and SQL Server CE are lightweight, embedded databases that run within the StresStimulus process.

Configuring Embedded Database Storage

  1. Navigate to the Result Storage node in the Workflow Tree.
  2. Select the database type by setting the Data Storage property:
    • Embedded SQLite (recommended)
    • Embedded SQL Server CE (deprecated)
  3. Specify the folder where database files will be saved.
    • If left blank, the default location is: % LocalAppData%\StresStimulus\SQLCE\

SQL Server

You can use your SQL Server instance to store StresStimulus test results.

SQL Server versions

StresStimulus supports SQL Server 2008 SP 2 and later.

Configuring SQL Server Storage

  1. Set the Database Type

    • Navigate to the Result Storage node in the Workflow Tree.
    • Set the Data Storage property to SQL Server.
  2. Configure the SQL Server Connection

    • Click the  button in the property grid to open the SQL Server Connection Settings dialog.
    • Enter the following details:
      • SQL Server name
      • Authentication type (Windows or SQL Server authentication)
      • User credentials (if using SQL Server authentication)
      • Database name

Alternatively, you can enter the full connection string for the database.

    Connection string

Starting from v5.6, the connection string will be encrypted in the configuration file (.ssconfig)

  3. Create or Verify the Database

    • Click Create/Check DB:
      • If the specified database does not exist, StresStimulus will create a new database with all required tables.
      • If an existing StresStimulus database is entered, the connection will be verified.
  4. Handling Slow SQL Server Instances

    • For large test runs on slower SQL Server instances, increase the SQLCommand Timeout property.
    • This can help prevent errors like: Timeout period elapsed before completion of the operation.

SQL Server User Permissions and Network Requirements

User Permissions

  • The user specified in the Login section must have database owner (dbo) privileges.
  • The user must have sufficient permissions to:
    • Create tables and other database objects.
    • Insert and update test result data.
  • If connecting to a new database, the user must also have permission to create databases.

Network Requirements

  • The network connection between the StresStimulus controller and SQL Server must be fast enough to handle real-time insert transactions.
  • VPN or WiFi networks may not provide sufficient speed and stability for storing test results.
  • If StresStimulus detects that the network connection is slowing down test execution, it will stop the test and display a slow connection error message.

Changing the Default Data Storage Settings

You can configure the default data storage settings in StresStimulus by following these steps:

Configuring Default Data Storage

  1. Open Settings

    • Navigate to Main Menu → Edit → Settings → General tab.
  2. Select the Default Data Storage Type

    • In the Default Data Storage dropdown, choose one of the following:
      • Embedded SQLite (default)
      • SQL Server
      • Embedded SQL Server CE (deprecated)
  3. Configure Additional Settings

    • Provide secondary database settings in the textbox below:
      • For Embedded Databases (SQLite, SQL Server CE): Specify the result storage folder.

        Default folder:

        • % LocalAppData%\StresStimulus\SQLCE\
      • For SQL Server: Enter the connection string.
